Handwriting Practice for Kids

Handwriting improves with short, regular practice. Little Learning Pond's Handwriting Gym gives your child a guided session of about 10 minutes, with stroke-by-stroke tracing and a prompt to finish on paper.

What a practice session includes

  1. Hand warm-ups. Wake up fingers and arms, about 2 minutes.
  2. Stroke warm-ups. Lines, circles, waves and loops.
  3. Letter lab. Watch, trace, copy, then write from memory.
  4. Words. Look, say, cover, write, check.
  5. Sentences. Capital letters, finger spaces and periods.
  6. Alphabet run. How many neat letters can you write in one minute?

The Letter lab covers little letters, big letters and numbers, grouped into families that share the same starting stroke. Your child can also choose any letter to practice and see their stars.

Tips for better handwriting

If handwriting is a real struggle, it is worth talking to your child's teacher, and to an occupational therapist if you have concerns.

Settings for every child

You can switch the model to the other side for left-handed writers, make the tracing path wide, medium or narrow, change the pencil line thickness, turn the colored sky, grass and ground zones on or off, turn spoken instructions on or off and pick the voice, and set a break reminder.
