Weekly Spelling Practice at Home
Most spelling lists come home on Monday and are tested on Friday. Practice works best when it is short, daily and varied. Little Learning Pond turns this week's list into seven short stages, from seeing and saying each word to a final test.
The seven stages
- Look & Learn. See the word, hear it, and say it slowly.
- Copy It. The word stays on the screen while your child types it.
- Peek & Spell. Look at the word for 3 seconds, then type it from memory.
- Missing Letters. Fill in the gaps in the word.
- Unscramble. Put the letters in the right order.
- Listen & Spell. Hear the word, then type it.
- Final Test. No hints and one try for each word.
A simple weekly routine
- Monday: type in the new list and do stages 1 and 2.
- Tuesday: stages 3 and 4.
- Wednesday: stages 5 and 6.
- Thursday: practice any words that were missed.
- Friday: the Final Test, which is the best check of what your child really knows.
This is only a suggestion. Ten minutes on most days works better than one long session, and you can stop whenever your child has had enough.
Make it fit your child
- Use your own list. Use "Change this week's words" to type in the words your child's teacher sent home.
- Record your own voice. Say each word yourself, so your child hears a familiar voice. You can choose whether practice uses the computer voice or your recordings.
- Pick the computer voice. Choose from the voices already on your device, with the more natural ones marked with a star.
- Earn rewards. Coins, stickers and badges celebrate small wins and keep practice fun.
Free and private
There is no sign-up and no ads. Your child's words, stars and recordings are saved only in the browser on your own device and are never uploaded. It works on computers, tablets and phones.
