⬆️ Exponents and Roots Practice
Exponents are a short way of writing repeated multiplication, and roots undo them.
These topics cover exponents and the rules for using them, square and cube roots, scientific notation, negative exponents and simplifying radicals.
Topics, by the age they were designed for
- Age 11ExponentsPowers of numbers
- Age 13Exponent rulesMultiply, divide, power
- Age 13Square & cube rootsPerfect powers and estimates
- Age 13Scientific notationVery big and very small numbers
- Age 14Negative & zero exponents2⁻³, 5⁰ and more
- Age 14Simplify square roots√72 = 6√2
The age on each topic is the age it was designed for, based on typical US school math. Schools in other countries teach topics in a different order, so treat the age as a guide and start where your child is comfortable.
Helping at home
- Remember that 2 to the power of 3 means 2 x 2 x 2, not 2 x 3.
- Learn the perfect squares up to 15 x 15. They make roots much easier.
- Scientific notation is just moving the decimal point. Count the places carefully.
How the practice works
Each practice round has 10 questions. Your child can type the answer or tap a choice, gets a second try, and sees the correct answer and a short hint when needed. Questions are generated fresh each time. It is free, with no sign-up and no ads, and progress and stars are saved on your device only.
Build your own course
On the Math Practice page, tap "Add to my course" on any topic from any age. Your picks are collected in one place, and a mixed round draws questions from only those topics.
