🧩 Patterns and Story Problems Practice
Patterns train children to look for what comes next, and story problems turn math into real situations.
These topics include number and shape patterns for younger children and word problems that use adding, taking away, multiplying and dividing.
Topics, by the age they were designed for
- Age 5PatternsWhat comes next?
- Age 6Story problemsAdd or take away
- Age 7Story problemsAdd or take away
- Age 8Story problemsMultiply and divide
The age on each topic is the age it was designed for, based on typical US school math. Schools in other countries teach topics in a different order, so treat the age as a guide and start where your child is comfortable.
Helping at home
- Read a story problem twice, then underline the question before doing any math.
- Draw a quick picture or a bar to see what is going on.
- Decide which operation fits after reading, not before.
How the practice works
Each practice round has 10 questions. Your child can type the answer or tap a choice, gets a second try, and sees the correct answer and a short hint when needed. Questions are generated fresh each time. It is free, with no sign-up and no ads, and progress and stars are saved on your device only.
Build your own course
On the Math Practice page, tap "Add to my course" on any topic from any age. Your picks are collected in one place, and a mixed round draws questions from only those topics.
